Downstream

The brief: To publish Downstream magazine, including complete redesign, and redefining editorial content.

The project: The design team set about redesigning what was an outdated publication, while our qualified journalists gave the content a complete overhaul, reflecting news, innovation, and industry insights. The relaunched Downstream was published in December 2013, featuring a sophisticated design, splitting the content into easy-to-navigate sections, including UK and International News, Distributor News, New Products, FPS Housekeeping and features. These would be incisive and thoughtful, focussing on informing the readership by sharing the views of experts, as well as helping to present the magazine as a platform for ‘discussion’ and ‘opinion’.

The magazine would be printed on high quality stock and perfect bound, with the front and back covers a thickness of 300gsm matt-laminated, and the inside pages 120gsm.

The aim was for Downstream to become a viable vehicle for advertising, a publication which a broad range of companies from across the fuel distribution industry would feature in. This relied on Communicate not only producing a quality product that companies wanted to be associated with, but also carrying out relevant promotional activities aimed at informing the industry of the relaunch.

The result: The detailed, in-depth editorial focus elevated the magazine from its predecessor, and when combined with its new, striking design and quality finish, the new FPS magazine became a different proposition, capable of fulfilling its purpose as being an effective advertising platform and the leading trade magazine representing the industry.

Advertising and readership continues to increase year-on-year, as well the magazine’s prestige and appeal, confirming its success and development.
