Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS)

The brief: To produce a magazine, associated print products, audio media, and implement
a core media sales function.

The project: Communicate was tasked with delivering this challenging, multi-faceted marketing role. It would include writing, editing and designing a respected quarterly trade magazine, Downstream, creating bespoke standalone print products, developing innovative audio media solutions, and providing a core sales function to underpin print advertising and the industry’s annual trade show, the FPS Expo.

The Downstream magazine was to be completely overhauled. The design team set about redesigning what was an outdated publication, while our qualified journalists aimed to redefine the content, reflecting news, innovation, and industry insights. We would also produce an array of marketing collateral which would help develop the FPS brand, and help increase sales performance.

Finally, as the FPS’s sales partner, Communicate would need to ensure the effective selling of exhibition space at FPS Expo’s new state-of-the-art venue, the Exhibition Centre Liverpool, ultimately ensuring this large, blue ribbon event was a success.

The result: Communicate transformed a tired, lacklustre magazine, by intermixing creative flair with sharp, incisive writing. The publication became a premium product for the fuel distribution industry, appealing to a range of companies as an effective marketing and sales platform. Advertising revenue has continued to increase year-on-year, as Downstream establishes itself as the leading magazine across this diverse industry.

The FPS Expo 2016 was the biggest and and most successful in the federation’s history. Communicate spearheaded the sale of exhibition space, which broke all previous records, with more than a hundred companies purchasing stands, in addition to numerous profitable sponsorship opportunities.
